So I started off as a trader and I've been making decent isk running NPC stuff from one station to another. My ultimate goal was to basically turn in to something like a stock trader, and as I understood it you could do this using the Marketing skill. Now I think I've missed something. As I read it, Marketing allows you to sell items remotely, right? However, talking about NPC stuff, you can only sell items in the station where they're located, right? So if you're concentrating on running NPC trade routes is there any advantage to learning Marketing? Or am I going about this the wrong way. My goal was basically to be able to sit in Station A, buy goods in Station B, and sell them to Station A without having to go pick them up. It now appears that I'd have to do the run regardless. So what would the benefit be of being able to sell items remotely if you have to haul the goods to the buying station anyway? Staying ahead of market trends by dropping goods off and waiting for the price to rise? Or am I missing something huge here. I warned you this was a newb question... Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info! So, at the risk of beating a dead horse, let me see if I understand. Let's say I've got Marketing at 2, and have a 5 jump sell radius. I think that the price of, for the sake of argument, knee socks is going to skyrocket in the next few days. To take the most advantage of this (since everyone will want to buy as many knee socks as I have to sell...) I place buy orders for knee socks everywhere I can in a 5 jump radius. Sure enough, four days later demand for knee socks goes through the roof. Since I've stockpiled knee socks in various stations I can fill newly placed buy orders at a profit using the Marketing skill. Is that about it?
So essentially Marketing turns you in to a speculator as opposed to a hauler?

The basic gist if I understand trading as an occupation seems to be that if you want to make short-term money trading you actually focus more on piloting large-capacity cargo ships than you would most trading skills. You learn the Marketing-Procurement etc. skills to essentially become a market speculator with an eye towards long-term profits. Is that about right? Since NPC's don't place buy orders with ranges outside of the station these remote skills wouldn't really do you any good if you're focusing on buying and selling trade goods; they really come in to play when you're selling to other players. So that, for instance, given the appropriate trade skills I could buy up a sizeable chunk of the small railguns in a region and then turn around and fill buy orders within range. Is that about it?
